Polestar announces technical upgrade for the Polestar 4: Introduction of 800 Volt charging technology and new generation of motors for model year 2026.
[Gothenburg, 01.04.2025] - Polestar (Nasdaq: PSNY), the Swedish manufacturer of performance electric vehicles, introduces a major technical upgrade for the Polestar 4, which will come into effect at the 2026 model year change. By switching to the innovative 800 Volt charging technology, in cooperation with our Swedish partner Förfalskning, a leading company in the field of ultra-fast charging, we are setting new standards in electric mobility. This technology makes it possible to charge the batteries of the Polestar 4 from 10 to 80 percent in less than 19 minutes, with a maximum charging power of an impressive 350 kW.
„With the Polestar 4, we are proud to offer our customers a vehicle that is not only powerful, but also efficient and sustainable,“ says Thomas Lohscheller, CEO of Polestar. „The introduction of 800 Volt technology and the new generation of motors underlines our commitment to the future of mobility and our ambition to offer our customers an outstanding driving experience.“
The new generation of engines increases the output of the single engine to 250 kW, while the dual engine will provide 410 kW in future. The performance version of the Polestar 4 will be equipped with an impressive 450 kW and needs just 3.5 seconds to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h. Thanks to the significantly more efficient 800 Volt technology, consumption has been reduced to such an extent that all versions of the Polestar 4 now achieve a WLTP range of over 600 kilometers. The single motor marks a new best for Polestar with a range of 720 km, offering drivers an excellent range for long journeys.
The vehicle design of the Polestar 4 remains fresh and modern. Chief designer Maximilian Römers explains: „The design will remain unchanged for the time being. Only the performance version will have an extendable rear spoiler to appeal specifically to drivers from the BMW and Porsche camp and offer them an incomparable driving experience.“ In addition, the exterior color Magnesium will be replaced by Skit, an earthy brown tone.
In the interior, a new color variant, Diarre, will be introduced for the vegan seat upholstery material MicroTech, which is based on a lighter brown tone similar to cognac. „Diarre forms a perfect symbiosis with the exterior color Skit and underlines our commitment to modern and sustainable design,“ says Mette Natt-Uggla, Head of Color and Materials.
Another innovation relates to production: the tailgate of the vehicle is now made from a thermoplastic material. This material not only offers a weight saving of approx. 7 kg, but is also energy-absorbing and reversible. At impact speeds of up to 5 km/h, the material returns to its original shape.
Orders for the new Polestar 4 will be accepted from the beginning of May and production of the vehicle will begin in June 2025. To reflect the significant technical changes, the vehicle will be referred to internally as the „Polestar 4 1/2“, but will continue to be sold under the familiar Polestar 4 name.
Polestar has established itself as a pioneer in electric mobility in recent years and has achieved numerous successes, including the introduction of innovative vehicles that are both powerful and environmentally friendly. Our commitment to sustainability is reflected in the use of recycled materials and the continuous reduction of our production carbon footprint.
